How to Download Instagram Reels

The Format Itself, and Why It Matters
A Reel is a short vertical video, capped at 90 seconds, framed at a 9:16 aspect ratio — roughly 1080 wide by 1920 tall when the upload was made on a recent phone. That shape is the reason a Reel looks odd letterboxed on a widescreen TV and perfect on a phone held upright, and it is worth knowing before you drop one into a landscape edit.
Unlike a story, a Reel is not on a timer. It stays on the profile until somebody removes it — which is precisely the catch. Permanence here belongs to the creator, not to you. Accounts get archived, go private, or get cleaned out, and the clip goes with them.
The In-App Bookmark Is Not a Download
Tapping the ribbon icon files a reference in your collections. Nothing is copied. Instagram is still the one holding the video, and your saved item is only a shortcut back to it. The moment the original is deleted, set to private, or region-blocked, that shortcut turns into an empty tile.
An MP4 sitting in your storage has no such dependency. It survives deletions, works with no signal, opens in players that have never heard of Instagram, and can be dropped straight into an editing timeline.
Getting the Reel Address
Every Reel has a web address of the form instagram.com/reel/ followed by its identifier. That string is all this tool needs.
From the phone app
With the Reel on screen, open the share sheet — the paper-plane icon, or the ⋯ button on the right-hand rail — and choose the entry that puts the address on the clipboard. It sits alongside the options for sending the clip to a friend.
From a computer
Open the Reel on the web so it fills its own page, then take the address out of the browser bar directly. The ⋯ menu on the post offers the same thing if you would rather click for it. Either way you end up with the identical string.
Handing It to DLGram
Open dlgram.org, put the cursor in the field and paste. The Paste button reads the clipboard for you if your browser allows it, which saves a fiddly long-press on a phone. Recognition takes a second or two and the Reel appears as a playable preview, so you can confirm you grabbed the right clip before spending any data.
Choosing a Rendition and Saving
Below the preview sits a quality picker — 1080P, 720P, 480P, 360P, 240P — and each entry carries its own file size. That labelling is the useful part: on a metered connection you can see exactly what the difference between renditions costs you before committing.
The list is generated from what Instagram actually holds for that clip, so it varies. A Reel filmed on a current phone typically offers the whole ladder; something older or uploaded at low resolution stops partway up. Nothing here invents pixels that were never recorded.
Files past roughly 40 MB are passed to the browser's own download manager, which handles long transfers and resumes far better than an in-page save does. There is no size ceiling to worry about.
Watching Reels Offline
This is what most people are really after. Saved clips play in airplane mode, on the underground, on a flight, in a basement gym — anywhere the app would simply spin. Because the file is ordinary MP4 video, the stock player on the device opens it with no extra software.
A stack of 30-second Reels is small enough to be worth keeping around: at 1080P most land in the low tens of megabytes, and stepping down to 480P for reference material rather than viewing pleasure shrinks that considerably. If you are building a watch-later collection for a long journey, mixing renditions by how much each clip actually matters is the sensible approach.
Audio, Music and Rights
The soundtrack is not a separate stream you have to chase; it is inside the video track and comes along automatically. What you hear on Instagram is what you get on playback.
Two caveats. First, a licensed track that plays in-app is still licensed after the download — keeping a copy for yourself is one thing, re-uploading it elsewhere for the music is what gets posts removed. Second, audio-only extraction is not offered here yet: there is no MP3 option, so pulling a sound out of a Reel means running the MP4 through a separate converter afterwards.
Some Reels are also uploaded muted on purpose. If a saved file is silent, check the original before assuming something broke in transit.
Remixes, Collabs and Paid Partnership Labels
A remix — the split-screen reply format — is stored by Instagram as one finished video with both panels already composited together. You cannot separate the two halves afterwards, because by the time it is published there is only ever one video track. The saved file is that combined clip.
A collab Reel is shown on two profiles at once but is a single underlying post, so both addresses resolve to the same media. Grabbing it twice from two different profiles just gets you the same file.
A paid partnership tag, like the sponsored badge and the branded-content disclosure, is drawn by the app on top of the player. It is interface, not video. None of it survives into the saved file — nor does the caption, the username, the like count or the audio attribution strip. What remains is the picture the creator actually rendered.
Where the File Lands
iPhone and iPad
Safari drops the MP4 into Files → Downloads. To move it into the camera roll, press and hold the file there and choose "Save to Photos". If the clip begins playing in a tab instead of saving, long-press the save button and pick "Download linked file" — Safari is previewing rather than storing.
Android
Chrome and every other Android browser write to Downloads, reachable through the Files app or any file manager. Media scanners on most builds surface it in the gallery on their own; if yours does not, move the file into DCIM. Behaviour is the same across Samsung, Xiaomi, Pixel, OnePlus and OPPO hardware.
Windows, Mac and Linux

When Something Goes Wrong
The address is rejected
Check it contains /reel/. Profile pages, hashtag pages and search results are not individual posts and have nothing to fetch. And the account must be public — a private profile stops the process cold.
The picture looks softer than it did in the app
Either a lower rendition was chosen from the list, or the upload itself was low resolution. The top entry in the picker is the best Instagram holds; there is no hidden higher version behind it.
Everything stalls after a run of downloads
Around 20 requests a minute triggers a short cooldown. It expires by itself — pause briefly, then continue.
A player refuses the file
Rare, and usually an ageing player rather than a bad file. VLC opens essentially anything and is the quickest way to tell whether the download or the software is at fault.
Frequently Asked Questions
Is the Instagram bookmark the same thing as saving a Reel?
No. Bookmarking files a pointer inside your account. Delete the original or make the profile private and the bookmark leads nowhere; an MP4 on your device does not care.
Will a saved Reel play with no signal?
Yes. Once the file is stored locally it plays in airplane mode with no connection and no app involved.
Does the soundtrack come with it?
